WHAT IS THIS MEDICATION USED FOR?

Semaglutide injection is used along with a diet and exercise program to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes (a long term condition in which the body does not produce or use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). This medication is used to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, eye problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function associated with people who have type 2 diabetes and uncontrolled high blood sugar levels.

Semaglutide injection works by causing insulin (a hormone produced and secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas that lowers blood sugar levels) release in response to high blood sugar (such as after a meal) and decreasing the amount of sugar your liver makes. That happens because this medication acts as a GLP-1 receptor agonist that selectively binds to and activates the GLP-1 receptor, which increases insulin production when blood sugar is high. Furthermore, this medication inhibits the production and release of sugar by the liver, and reduces food intake by slowing down digestion in the stomach. As a result this assists to control diabetes and weight loss, but it is not a cure.
